Economy
Sparta’s economy was based on farming, because they didn’t have enough land to feed all of the people. They used slaves and non-citizens to do all of the farm work, and took their neighbors and used them as slaves as well. The non-citizens made shoes, red cloaks (for the soldiers), iron tools, and pottery.
On the other hand, Athens’ economy was based off of trading because the land around them wasn’t rich enough to farm. They got wood from Italy and grain from Egypt. Athenians traded honey, olive oil, silver, and pottery. Athenians bought and sold goods in the agora. Most people bought lettuce, onions, and wine. They also bought and sold slaves.
