Women & Slaves
In Sparta, women lived the same life like men. They were expected to be strong, healthy, and ready to fight. They had a little more rights than other women did. Women were allowed to speak freely with their husband’s friends, and they could remarry if their husband is out at war for too long. The slaves in Sparta, the helots, were those who have been captured by the Spartans. They were treated very harshly, because the Spartans thought that the helots would revolve. In Athens, on the other hand, women and slaves were not considered citizens. Most women couldn’t choose their own husbands, and they couldn’t participate in the Assembly. The slaves were often captured in war or born into slavery. All of them had to work an equal amount of hard work, though.
